Bebê Kramer was born in another small town named Vacaria, in Rio Grande do Sul state, and now lives in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was here that the organizers of a local festival invited three Dublin based musicians to play sessions in various pubs over the weekend. Such was the inherent connection of musical approach, style and mindset that the idea of forming some kind of group was borne. A month later, and after much thought and consideration the three-piece became four as the cosy confines of a basement in Monkstown was turned from sitting room to rehearsal room. Following months of forging of individual minds into one collective unit Aogán, Daire, Éamonn and Mick felt the time was right to try out their new sound. On a cold December night 'The Cobblestone', on the outer edge of Dublin's inner City was shaken from rock to rafter; a gig that has since become known as 'The Wobble in The Cobble'. Soon afterwards Slide made their first release with 'The Flying Pig' which brought them to many of the main stages \u0026amp; festivals at home and abroad; from the National Concert Hall to the Cambridge Festival, England and from the headline act of the German Folk Festival Tour to the Inerceltic Festival of L'Orient, France. Thus lending a sense of the inevitable to their winning of 'The Best Newcomers' award by Irish Music Magazine in 2001. In the years that followed Slide continued to grow and develop. Unable to rid themselves of a feeling that the tradition was beginning to repeat itself, together with a keen desire for self exploration and collective innovation, a second album 'Harmonic Motion' was recorded. This encapsulated not only a continuation of self penned words and music but a heightened maturity in their content and delivery. So much so, that names such as Bill Whelan, Damian Dempsey, Hazel O'Connor, John Spillane, Stockton's Wing, Danú, Niamh Parsons \u0026amp; The Black Family called the artists in on some musical projects of their own. It is obvious from listening to The Way You Look Tonight that Jennifer has a beautiful voice, a real feeling for vintage lyrics and the ability to swing at every tempo. Featured on the CD are pianist \/ accordionist Sonny Barbato, guitarist Kevin Barry, trumpeter Trent Austin, saxophonist Matt Langley, drummers Les Harris, Jr. and Dave Jamrog, and bassists Jim Lyden and Aubrey Harris. Each contributes colorful solos and blends in very well with Jennifer's voice. The set opens with 'The Way You Look Tonight,' a happy version reminiscent of Billie Holiday's recording with Teddy Wilson. Austin's exuberant trumpet is a major asset. 'There's A Small Hotel,' inspired by Ella Fitzgerald's version from her Rodgers and Hart Songbook project, is sung sweetly and with feeling. Duke Ellington's 'Sophisticated Lady' is taken as a tasteful duet with pianist Barbato. 'I'll Get By,' usually performed as a slow ballad, is taken as a medium-tempo cooker with some fine tenor from Langley. Jennifer's expressive vocal on 'A Foggy Day' is followed by a creative trumpet solo and a colorful tradeoff by piano and drums. After a quietly passionate version of 'Don't Explain,' Jennifer swings 'There Is No Greater Love,' which has an excellent chorus from guitarist Barry. A playful and sensuous 'Ain't Misbehavin'' and a spirited 'I'm Beginning To See The Light' precede Jennifer's heartfelt duet with guitarist Barry on 'Can't Help Lovin' That Man.' The set concludes with a rollicking 'Rolling In My Sweet Baby's Arms' which features infectious New Orleans parade rhythms, Sonny Barbato on accordion, and a party atmosphere that is pure joy. First trained as an opera singer and classical pianist, Jennifer has been performing Jazz for over twenty years. Some of the tracks are genuine classics, like the tender 'Silently spinning' and the inspirational native American song 'The river is flowing'. These are at once personal love songs but also universal messages, with an element of shamanic imagery in the lyrics. The phrase that best describes the overall atmosphere... as so often with Asher's music... is 'other-worldly'. Asher forged his initial reputation as a new-age instrumentalist, but is now better known as a mystical singer-songwriter, slightly reminiscent of Peter Gabriel in some respects. It also means that he's been making music for long enough that it's time for him to take a look back and survey his repertoire. So, yes, you could call this album a career retrospective, except that Jerling certainly isn't ready to sit back and rest on his laurels. Rather than taking the easy way out and slapping together old tracks for a greatest-hits or best-of compilation, Jerling decided to revisit some of his favorite tunes and record them anew in one of his favorite settings - that cozy little second-floor coffeehouse on Phila Street, Caffe Lena. The recording took place in a single evening's performance just three months ago on June 30, and Jerling brought along a couple of ace musicians and longtime friends - bassist Tony Markellis and keyboardist-accordionist Teresina Huxtable (who also happens to be his wife) - to back him up. And Jerling didn't skimp on the music. For the album, which clocks in at more than 70 minutes, he culled 18 of his finest original tunes full of poignant poetry, wry humor and some rock 'n' roll heart. Many of the tunes were selected by fans on his email list. The touching, small-town tribute to aging dreamers, \"Bush League Hero,\" is the oldest tune on the disc, dating back to 1975. It doesn't sound one bit dated. Here he founded the Kingston Symphony Orchestra and taught at both Kingston Polytechnic and Morley College. He continued composing throughout his life and these three quartets span over a thirty year period. 'I find it always hard (and perhaps unnecessary) to say anything in words about my music. If the music has not said anything then I fear words will not contribute very much. Words do not explain what lies behind the notes, namely the entire make up of the composer's personality, his aspirations, fear, terrors, but also his joys and happiness. All this will, if he has succeeded, have been expressed in his music but can only be described by the music itself.' Walter Wurzburger, 1989 Walter Wurzburger (1914-1995) Walter Wurzburger is one of a number of musicians of the 20th Century whose lives have been shaped by exile: in his case, fleeing from Nazi Germany, and re-establishing himself first in France, then Australia, and finally in England. His life was dedicated to music: as performer, composer, arranger and as conductor, he lived through the social and musical changes of the 20th Century, and his life and musical development reveal much about that century. By the time of his death in 1995, he had written over 60 completed works, for a wide variety of ensembles, including 5 string quartets, a piano concerto, a violin concerto, a number of chamber works, studies and songs and a sequence of works for solo piano. The three quartets recorded here represent the complete historical range of Walter Wurzburger's composing career: from 1944 while serving in the Australian army; to the serial compositions of his main period of composition (stretching from the Darmstadt years of the early 1960s through to the late 1980s); and finally into his late period, where many works took on a neo-classical edge, with elements on tonality coexisting with remnants of serial method. Walter Wurzburger was born in Frankfurt on 21 April 1914, the second son of Siegfried and Gertrude. His parents were both professional music teachers, and his father was organist (and occasional composer) for the Frankfurt Synagogue. Walter composed his first piece in 1925 : apparently it was 'greeted with amusement' by the family; subsequently, in his teens, he studied music at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt and Frankfurt University, where he was taught by Bernhard Sekles and Mátyás Seiber. He left Germany in 1933 at the advent of the Nazi regime and based himself in France as a jazz and classical performer and arranger. In 1939, on the eve of war, he took a series of engagements in Singapore and the far east. In 1940, along with other 'aliens', he was interned in Singapore and then Australia, where he served in the Army in a non-combat role. In 1946, he studied for a music degree at Melbourne University and later joined the music faculty; in these years in Australia he had a number of compositions performed. In 1950, he made a first return to Europe, touring the post-war landscape with his brother Danny. He visited London in 1951, and 'forgot to go back' to Australia. In 1952, he resumed composition studies with Seiber, and studied clarinet with Frederick Thurston and Bassoon with Richard Newton. From 1954, he worked as a telephone operator, and played jazz and composed in his 'hard-earned spare time'. In the early 1960s, he attended the Darmstadt Summer school for three consecutive summers. In 1966 he married Hannah Gibianska and in 1967 his twin daughters Ruth and Madeleine were born. Based in the Kingston-upon-Thames area, he taught music at Morley College, Tiffin Boys School and Kingston Polytechnic. After studying conducting with Guy Woolfenden, in 1974 he founded the Kingston Philharmonia, a very adventurous local amateur orchestra, and was it's conductor from 1974-1991. He continued to compose and revise earlier works until the end of his life, and had a number of his works performed. String Quartet No 5 (1990) The last quartet he composed, starts with explicit serial material and techniques, though with a lyrical quality emerging from the phrases. The first movement uses one of Walter's favourite structural devices: a 4\/4 crotchet beat metamorphoses into a sprightly 3\/8 quaver pulse. The fast-moving scherzo that follows is chromatic, but rooted in tonality, perhaps more influenced by Hindemith than serialism. The expansive adagio starts with a self-consciously archaic classical melodic phrase firmly in a minor key. If on paper it looks like something close to Bach (a composer Walter was often drawn to in later works), it sounds lush and Romantic. The finale returns to the tough angularity of the first movement. String Quartet No 4 (1987) This quartet was first performed in July 1989 by the Hanson String Quartet at a Society for the Promotion of New Music Composer's forum held in the Royal Northern College of Music. The composer wrote the following programme note for it's first performance : 'The two chords built up in the opening bars between them make up a basic series which is then exploited three more times in various transpositions before other mirror versions are applied. An interesting contrapuntal interplay develops, which is extended, reduced and reused. The opening flourish re-appears three times as a landmark throughout the movement: a form emerges, be it a sonata (of a sort) or a rondo. A curiosity is the quotation (only very short) from Beethoven's Choral Symphony, from the end of the finale when the choir is bowing out with 'schöner Gotterfunken', here transposed a tone down (FDGC). No apologies. And since we are talking about quotations, a lovely one presented itself towards the end of the first movement, and would not go away: Shostakovich's monogram, here transposed by an augmented fourth. There are of course quotations, influences and there is plain plagiarism: of the latter crime I hope I am not guilty, but influences there must be galore. Very often I cannot put my finger on them, but they hover somewhere in the background. Berlioz springs to mind somewhere in the first movement, and Stravinsky and Bartok in the second. But also Shostakovich, and, of all people, Khachaturian. No denying the influence of Hindemith and of the Schoenberg school, two opposite poles if there ever were any. In the second movement you could imagine if anyone wants to imagine anything all sorts of grotesque nightbirds and insects fluttering about, eventually organising themselves into an army of sinister creatures. It is only a thought. The last movement is jolly, energetic and somewhat abrasive.' String Quartet No 2 (1944) Walter, in later life wondered whether his early works were worth hearing but listeners at the first modern performances of this quartet (given by the Aylwin Ensemble in 2000) were left in no doubt of it's interest. It is an approachable work whose style tells of it's time: though it is perhaps surprisingly 'English' in character for a work composed by a German Jew living for the time being in Australia. The first movement follows a Beethovenian slow introduction with a fugal 3\/8 which ends with some lively passagework for the first violin. The slow movement, taking it's shape if not it's tonality again from classical models, contrasts polyphony with homophony. A quirky menuet and contrastingly melodic trio follow; then the finale offsets a march-like theme with intricate interplay between all four players. Aylwin String Quartet The Aylwin String Quartet is a distillation of the 'Aylwin Ensemble' which was founded in 1996. These four founder members of the group, Richard Aylwin, Ruth Hudson, Amanda Denley and Graham Bradshaw, who are all either current or past members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, were keen to establish an outlet for their own creative ideas within this more intimate framework. It was grown, cultivated, and harvested in that fertile region that sports as many names as the number of musical rivers that wind and intersect through and around it's broad and shadowy borders: Americana, Roots Rock, Cosmic American Music to name the most common ones. It's from a place where Bob Dylan resides, the Boss, the Band and Van the Man too. Certainly Gram Parsons was seen around those parts and characters from many a shady Grateful Dead tale have shuffled in and out of the territory. Add a new saloon to the long line that make up the exiles on it's main street: The Countdown Lounge, built and maintained by some old timers with some new tall tales, The Bird Dogs. But, I didn't even know it. I didn't know the joy I was missing out on until I was set free at age fourteen. I didn't know what life was like. I was in bondage to bitterness, and I didn't know it. I thought it was everybody else that was bitter. I was also held in bondage to lust. I have thought of it before, as a fighter jet that is stuck in a mud pit; gurgling deeper and deeper down below the light. I thought I was good. I thought I was a godly Christian. Oh, what a lie I was living. When my Mom was saying that she thought I needed to confess some sin, I thought, 'Oh Mom, you're getting all worried about something that doesn't exist'. Oh, what a proud, hypocritical, useless life I was living. But when I was fourteen, I prayed with my parents. As I prayed aloud, my Dad named off all the sins in the book, slowly, one by one. And I confessed them one by one. All the sins that I had ever committed that I could think of, and I thought long and hard about each one. It was not easy. There was a war going on inside of me, and the devil wanted to win. But he didn't, praise God! In Psalms it says, 'Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me'. So, I prayed that God would bring to light each sin in my life. I started to get excited as more and more got out into the light. I was starting to feel guiltless, and forgiven before God, and my parents. Finally, after about three hours, I got to a point that I honestly could not think of any more unconfessed sin in my life. The things that I needed to rectify with others (like stealing), I had already cleared up. And that is how I found freedom! I remember sitting on the couch after the time of confession. I was so happy, enjoying the love of the Lord. I had never felt so light. I was thinking, 'This is what true Christian life is'. I couldn't stop smiling and laughing. Ever since that day of clearing my conscience I have known what the true Christ life is! Praise the Lord! That was the second most important day in my life. The first was when I got saved, the second was when I was set free from sin, and found the Spirit life. I can now talk easily with my parents, like a good friend. I now know how sweet it is to pray. When I sing the song Sweet Hour of Prayer I can sing it from the depths of my heart. It's the same way with many of the old hymns, they have come alive to me now. I had heard them many times before, but my spirit didn't connect with them, until I experienced the genuine Christian life. I can sing them with all of my heart. Now I know what the grace of God is. It is the desire and power the do God's will. I had heard that many times before, but I didn't know what it was until I experienced it. God has given me so much grace that the desire to lust has been completely removed from me, it would only ruin all the joy I have. I love to talk about God. Before I repented, the Bible was not exciting to me. I did not have a longing to read the precious Word of Life. But now I do. Close fellowship with God is so good. It is the most FUN thing there is. Words cannot describe His love for me. His compassions are new every morning. And such is the resurrection life!!! Jesus set's you absolutely free!!! All this that I have been telling you about is step two. The first step is believing on Jesus to save you from the penalty of sin. If you have not done this you need God's Simple Plan of Salvation. The Lord gave me a vision for my life soon after this transformation. It was that I should learn guitar, write songs, and sing. I wanted to show others, and lead them to Jesus's victory. On Christmas 1996 when I was 16 my good parents gave me a guitar. God gave me my first official song when I was 18 (God is So Good to Me), and He has given many since. The distinctive voice of Diana, which draws comparisons to the rock legend STEVIE NICKS, is one that is seldom found in Christian music. That is, putting legs on one's faith, or, walking the walk, and talking the talk...This musical group puts wings on it's faith. Billed as a Christian rock band, they seem more talented than the typical church 'house' band...(and they have just begun a bit of touring as well). Tyler and Crisis seem able to do it all--electric, acoustic, folk, country and blues, up-tempo and thought- provoking and slow. Basically, without getting preachy, the lyrics speak traditional Christian messages of salvation, love for your fellow man, service and being anchored in one's faith. And throughout this 12-song CD, making no pretense of their beliefs, each offering is performed with passion and joy. There is also no mistaking Tyler's strong alto vocals. She performs wonderfully in any genre, and seems to have found her vocal calling in the slightly gritty 'No-Blues Blues'--sort of a LOU ANN BARTON\/ANGELA STREHLI Texas type of sound. Really, really nice! Other highlights have to include 'My Rock and the Light of My World' which is a beautiful a cappella gospel harmony with Tyler, Toni Harless and Linda Rodak. That trio teams up again on 'Solid Ground' for some of the best female harmonies you'll ever hear. Perhaps the tune that really sums up this group is 'Gifts to the Giver': '...You see, the power is within us, sent from God above; usin' what we have to demonstrate His love...bring your gifts to the Giver (we are His hands)...' Tyler and Crisis are a walking, talking--singing-- demonstration of that very belief. Maybe I am getting soft in my old age, but I didn't mind this at all! I must confess to just listening to the music, and blocking out a lot of the words, just in case I would be converted, you know... But I enjoyed it! The production was top notch and the musicians obviously were of a professional quality. Luckily, Crisis (not to be confused with the death metal band) and Diana Tyler have made a wonderfully poppy Christian Rock album. I don't exactly have a favorite from the album, because it's another one of those wonderful albums that needs to be listened to in full to get the complete effect, though 'Solid Ground,' 'Reach Out,' and 'He's There' are some of the tracks that stand out especially to me. Three Cornish-born musicians: Chris Payne, his cousin Janna on vocals and guitarist Andy Brodie teamed up with lyric writer Tim Vince from London to form the core of the group. The style of this record varies from an almost soft-rock genre of songs like 'Ignore the living world' through to the anthemic Celtic-style 'Solomon Brown' (a tribute to the crew of a lifeboat that perished during a terrible storm off the Cornish coast in 1981). There's also a frantic reel ('The Bodmin Horse'), songs of persecution, ('Ishmael' and 'The Slaver') as well as more traditional folk songs ('Song from the sea'). Music from this part of the world is starting to create a lot of interest, and Eden have included a song 'Armoriow' composed by Richard Gendal in the Cornish language. Cornish is a Brythonic Celtic language that is very similar to Breton and Welsh. Some of the more unusual instruments that feature on 'Tide' include, crumhorns, cornamuse and the Breton Bombarde which sounds a little like a bagpipe. In the mid 1970s moved to Miami, Florida where he attended undergraduate music studies at Miami Dade Community College and later at Florida International University. In the mid 1980s moved to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area attending graduated studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. For the past 25 years Mr. Leon has been working as a professional musician performing, conducting, composing, recording, and arranging for a wide variety of musical ensembles; as well as tutoring and teaching for several public and private music institutes. Mr. Leon is the co-author of a new and revolutionary piano method for small children soon to be published by Warner Brothers. As a solo pianist Mr. Leon's style and delicate pianistic touch has been praised by many of his colleagues, collaborators and friends including Miami Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Federico Britos Ruiz, concert pianist and professor Phyllis Sdoia-Satz, director of the prestigious music academy Sdoia-Satz Music Institute, and by the world renowned master pianist Richard Clayderman. Throughout the years Mr. Leon has performed at several important sites including many hotels, restaurants, and country clubs primarily in the south Florida area.
