The Rain Crows' 'Dream of Flying Dream' is an album of songs inspired by Nature, but not preciously so. The members of the band are all connected to the natural world in some personal or professional capacity so it was only 'natural' that these songs would come together in an album. The first song on the album, written by Julie, is about saving box turtles crossing the highway. The second track came from a vision that Wendy had in which her troubles were floating away like a flock of blackbirds. The third is Bill's account of an ethereal dream he had about flying high above his boyhood town. 'All That's Left of Me' is written from the perspective of an old, lonely barn. 'Realms of the Blest' comes from an ancient tombstone inscription that Julie had tried unsuccessfully to read for years until one day when the sunlight was just right. Wide-open spaces inspired Wendy and Bill's song 'Big Sky,' while Craig's 'Watching the River' is a classical guitar meditation that merges with a lilting Irish melody. The awesome loneliness of the native prairie and it's abandoned homesteads gave Bill the urge to write 'Is Anybody Out There?' Wendy's 'Songbird' has a 1920s girl-group vibe complete with three-part vocal harmonies. A lover waits, full of both hope and doubt, in a South American cafe in 'Esperanza.' Julie's emotion-drenched vocals on 'Make My Own Weather' leave no doubt that this is a song about control. And the album closes with Wendy's soulful 'Tiny Spirit' written after a close encounter with a hummingbird (it actually landed on her and stayed there for almost a minute!-true story!) This album was recorded at The Indigo Hill Soundcave in Whipple, Ohio during the winter of 2012-13.
