His sets span the entire history of African-American music and his hometown of Detroit. Plenty of DJs might reference hip-hop, soul, disco, house, techno and new wave as influences, but few would try to cram them all into one set. His persona behind the decks, effectively an alter-ego of Kenny Dixon Junior, is a complicated one. At times he wants to avoid the audience entirely, obscuring his face with a mask or hiding behind a sheet. But other times he's happy to be the centre of attention, using a microphone to shout party-stating banter and, on one occasion at a roller rink, joining the dance floor mid-set to help sell T-shirts emblazoned with his image. Most often he plays music that people love, but sometimes he seems to intentionally clash with the setting and earlier DJ sets. At a satisfying 19 songs, Dam let's grooves breath, this is a mix to happily get lost within. It's a document in vibe. Unexpected contemporary joints from low-key producers like Henning and L33 mingle with lost gems from unlikely places. 80's Fusion-Jazz guitarist Tony Palkovic on \"True To Yourself\" follow the the airy-burn of new-age ensemble Gaussian Curve's \"Broken Clouds\" or the super rare bliss-Funk of \"Theme From Beach Boy\" from 1982. Dam's excellent collaboration with Nite Jewel, as 'Nite-Funk' on \"Can U Read Me?\" is pure bliss and such a fantastic collaboration you'd be yearning for more., reminding listens that one of Dam's biggest assists is his duality from master DJ to trend-setting producer. And we get this heavy on Dam's DJKicks exclusive \"Believer\". Sheets of synth lines fall all around a locking drum program that starts off innocently enough but ends you in a halfhypnotic state. An extensive instrumental composition that on it's own could only be classified as signature Modern-Funk. A man of many musical hats, Texas born, Detroit raised Dear has a wide reaching discography that takes in face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion. Often with a gothic slant and full of curiousness, his pensive but playful music is an intoxicating distillation of many different influences, often with his own stylised vocals at the centre. As co-founder of both Ghostly International and Spectral Sound Dear has also been responsible for some of the underground scene s most exciting new music, plenty of which appears here. Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed and always evolving career, Dear is exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special. Included along the way are three brand new and exclusive cuts from Dear himself, one under his own name and two as Audion. They are typically weird and intriguing cuts that tie the whole unhinged and freaky mix together. Catherine Britton is a celebrated DJ and producer who can work crowds at underground havens like Berghain and Panormabar as much as she can at vast outdoor festivals like Tomorrowland. Cassy also runs her own self titled label, has made an entry into the hallowed fabric mix series and never lives in one place too long. That shows in the wide remit of sonic influences on display in this singular long player offering. With no real plan other than to make an album as unpretentious and natural as possible, Donna simply reflects the sounds that have enthused and inspired Cassy over the years, but it did't come easy. \"I had broken up with my husband, left Berlin, left my friends and left a way of making music and a way of living life,\" she recalls. \"It was too painful to make music. I tried singing and it felt awful. I had to look at myself and understand how much I truly disliked myself. I had to get out of all my unhealthy relationships with people that were a mere reflection of how I felt inside. Music producing was out of the question. It reminded me of who I tried to be for other people.\" Once the album writing process eventually started in earnest after six years of stop start, Cassy found out she was pregnant.
