It's not unlike his debut of four years prior, Wrong-Eyed Jesus!, only bigger, darker, and weirder. A look back at 43 years of life-in-Technicolor, the disc is suitably all over the map, at times recalling Tom Waits at his most evocative, Neil Young at his most emotive, and PJ Harvey at her most desperate. But these tags too easily resolve a wonderful mess of an album by a man who's clearly operating on a wavelength all his own. Consider the lyrics: \"I'm handcuffed to a fence in Mississippi\/My girlfriend blows a boozy good-bye kiss\/I see flying squirrels and nightmares of stigmata\/Then awakening to find my Trans-Am gone\"; \"God was drunk when he made me, but that's okay, 'cause I forgive him\"; \"From baby's breath to the rattle of death, I seek the love that never fails. \" Thus the stage is set for the \"hick-hop\" to come. That's the description the singer's given his brand of - oh, how shall we put this? - electronic-laced, bluegrass-tinged, outer-space country... with a hint of R\u0026amp;B thrown in for good measure. Not a sound that translates too well to the printed page (or computer screen), but one that's so adventurous that a lesser description just wouldn't do it justice. The ambitious genre cross-pollination - from the intergalactic-planetary take on Roger Miller's \"King Of The Road\" to the haunting \"Corvair\" to the Lou Reed hiccup that is \"10 Miles To Go On A 9 Mile Road - is the work of some unlikely collaborators: trip-hop trio Morcheeba, Sade cofounder Andrew Hale, and electronic guru Q-Burns Abstract Message. How these people got together, let alone how they got together with White, is anybody's guess. Sometimes you just gotta look to the cosmos and give thanks. Which is just the type of act inspired by No Such Place, a crazy, mixed-up collection befitting a crazy, mixed-up world. Richard Gehr who writes so much better then we had this to say about Tom: You don't need to be a polymath to love Tom Zé's's music, but it helps. A seminal figure of the early-'70s Tropicalismo movement in Brazil that launched the careers of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes, among others, Zé's is a card-carrying cultural cannibal inspired equally by both ideas and sounds. \"I don't make art,\" he has said. \"I make spoken or sung journalism.\" By way of explaining his unique outsider status in Brazilian popular music for National Public Radio, Zé recalled how he \"discovered at a young age that I was horrible composer, a horrible instrumentalist, and a horrible singer.\" Like Lee Perry, George Clinton, Kip Hanrahan and Hal Willner, Zé is a genre unto himself, an uncompromising ringmaster with a talent for marshaling mighty forces to manifest his idiosyncratic musical visions. Born Antonio José Santana Martins in the outback village of Irara, Bahia, in 1936, Tom Zé was a semipopular singer-songwriter from his eponymous debut album in 1968 through the '70s. By the end of the '80s, however, a discouraged Zé was on the verge of abandoning music completely. In fact, he was on the verge of assuming management of a gas station with his wife when he learned that David Byrne wanted to meet him. Drawn to it's barbed-wire cover illustration, Byrne had picked up a copy of Zé's 1975 album Estudando o Samba (Studying Samba) while visiting Brazil, and wanted to meet it's maker. The following Luaka Bop releases of Tom's music revitalized his career, nowhere more so then in Brazil. Tom's third Luaka Bop album, Com Defeito de Fabricao (Fabrication Defect), is Zé's most fully realized so far. It consists of fourteen \"defects,\" tracks Zé's composed through his \"esthetics of plagiarism,\" or arrasto, which he defined as \"'wilding' with a purpose, i.e. robbery.\" Zé's denounces cynical first-world purveyors of commercialized crap to the third-world masses while celebrating said masses' supposed imperfections: religious hypocrisy, curiosity, stupidity, raging youthful hormones and a love of dance. The class was organized by a local high school music teacher and his wife, and held in a small home-built studio of their garage. In the years to come, Doug wrote and self-pressed an album called \"Gentle Persuasion\". The other students of the class became Doug's band members, while his teacher joined on vibes and his wife on bass. (Doug learnt to play guitar from the teacher, who actually didn't know how to play himself - thus letting Doug develop his very own (wild!) style of playing). Doug then let the album sit in his garage for five years, before he started taking it around to a few shops around SF. He was a salesman for IBM in Las Vegas, where he sold Selectric Typewriters and then word processors during the day and at night he world perform in the Las Vegas lounges. He was somewhat of an engineer and adapted a Hammond B3 organ to play a moog synth with some of the organ keys, (some still played the organ), and he adapted the organ's foot controlled bass levers to play two Moog synth bass pedals (a failed item Moog made for a few years.) Thinking he wasn't much of a live performer he had a wooden puppet made that he named T.J Hustler, and together with the puppet, he would engage in long philosophical soliloquies. If you meet Tim, he is not someone who stops talking. In fact he even created a little book called Universal Philosophy. He has a lot to say about everything. Currently he lives with his 103 year old mother in Oakland. There he infrequently plays shows on his Casio where he fashions himself a live Karaoke performer, who comes complete with 5 wireless mics and P.A. and a list of about a 100 songs he can play, (all of which sound remarkably similar.) The opener was an unknown NYC band that went by King Changó. David came back from the show raving about an incredible, vivacious singer who climbed all over the speakers and leapt around the stage. He thought it was one of the best performances he'd ever seen and that Luaka Bop should sign them. We did. King Changó was the first Latin rock band signed to an American label, and their singer, Andrés 'Blanquito Man' Blanco, was indeed a force of nature. We released two King Changó albums, featuring members who went on to start playing in bands such as the Dap Kings and Antibalas. Blanquito Man unfortunately passed away in 2017 after a long battle with liver cancer. We didn't notice that the stereo album has five songs and this one has four, dropping off the instrumental \"Jungle Gods\". And though the songs on both albums sound similar, they are not the same. Uchenna, who originally licensed the tracks for us said that Onyeabor had mentioned that he lost the masters for the first album. So I wonder, did he rerecord the record from the record he originally made, shortened the tracks, and added some parts? The class was organized by a local high school music teacher and his wife, and held in a small home-built studio of their garage. In the years to come, Doug wrote and self-pressed an album called \"Gentle Persuasion\". The other students of the class became Doug's band members, while his teacher joined on vibes and his wife on bass. (Doug learnt to play guitar from the teacher, who actually didn't know how to play himself - thus letting Doug develop his very own (wild!) style of playing). Doug then let the album sit in his garage for five years, before he started taking it around to a few shops around SF. For promotion, he would play acoustic, solo shows for patients and elderly people at a hospital where he worked as a nurse's aid. At a few occasions, he also arranged to play on the City Visions Public Access television show, which, like his record and hospital shows, went pretty much unnoticed. Today, Doug is starting to receive a cult following.
