This time Tristan worked with his girlfriend Olivia Dreisinger to develop a fictional character: the young lovelorn Delphi. She is represented throughout by a recurring melody, with the album developing the story around her. Deeper than this however, Delphi represents the hurdles faced by modern lovers, and those felt personally by Tristan, as the album encompasses a wide range of his emotions. The character Delphi finds solace in escaping to a place, her namesake, the ancient Greek city. She gets lost in her fantasy, realising it is not as she had idealised. \"Olivia and I started making the album cover as soon as I knew what direction Delphi was headed in. I took objects that had significance to me at the time of production and physically recreated them as \"Delphi world\" objects, so that the albums narrative and each track are represented in the cover photo. If you flip the album over, there is a computer rendering by Paulin Rogues of the two landmarks in the ancient city of Delphi - not quite ancient or modern Delphi, somehow real life but also fantastical.\" Delphi is an album where the real and the fantastic combine, where functional club music meets evocative piano miniatures. \"I ended up working on Delphi for over a year, where it developed and grew in parallel to my own life. A time for peaceful inner reflection, amidst the backdrop of British woodlands, dramatic skies and turbulent storms. Finding peace with mental health and being mindful of the beauty in death and endings.\"'Sleepmoss', the second album from Meemo Comma a.k.a. Brighton-based producer Lara Rix-Martin, is an adventurous, unusual and very contemporary sonic take on the impact of landscape. It's a kind of storytelling, inspired by the shifting landscapes of her daily walks with her dog on the South Downs.Discussing her under-the-radar debut album 'Ghost on the Stairs' with Aimee Cliff at The Fader in 2017, she noted how she is \"drawn to eerie sounds in my work.\" This fascination remains on 'Sleepmoss' but the context has changed from the interior and inwards gaze to a much wider, wilder viewpoint. Lara describes her new record as being \"about getting lost in the sumptuous divinity of the dark months in Britain. It is in many ways the opposite reflection of 'Ghost on the Stairs' which was about internal processing of sounds, specifically human speech. The last album was almost an exorcism of issues troubling me but this album is about the glory of solitude and the richness of romance that can be found in nature.\" 'Sleepmoss' challenges us to rethink our perceptions of the \"pastoral\" and to look at nature afresh with new eyes. For not only are the landscapes around us an escape: much more lies there, it's this turbulence we need to find peace with, and Sleepmoss grapples with the physicality of the landscape in a fresh and intuitive way.Rix-Martin notes \"Musically, we have never truly embraced rugged landscapes in their full glory and I felt this when I thought about the many different composers over the centuries, their work seemed uptight and far too human in scale. For instance Vaughan Williams had unquestionably beautiful moments in The Lark Ascending, but it's too clean, too controlled. I wanted to channel a take on classical music that was hyper-real, focusing on letting the elements speak to us, not the other way around.\"A visual influence is J.M.W. Turner - \"his work with changing light and storms that are raw and expressive.\" and the abstract way in which Turner boldly revealed both horror and beauty (some would say \"reality\") is reflected in the sonic approach throughout Sleepmoss. The album's timeline starts out with summer's end, and the feeling of the air changing. Within this timeline, Rix-Martin describes the drama of her songs as visual stories. \"The sounds around us are totally different depending on the season, I always assumed it was to do with the change in water vapour and heat in the air. Summer is much too high pitched and spiky.\"  To pull out a couple of our favourites, the songs 'Night Rain' and 'Murmur' are \"the story of predator and prey, death and life, one fortifying the other while a storm rumbles. DJ Nate is from the West Side of Chicago and was the label's first ever footwork signing back in 2010. His strange, sample-heavy sound was the acid test to introduce footwork to a wider audience, outside Chicago and certain aficianados, and it created the opportunity for Planet Mu to release the two \"Bangs \u0026amp; Works\" compilations and introduce the world to such artists as DJ Rashad, Jlin and Traxman.  Since \"Da Trak Genious\" was released, DJ Nate has released R\u0026amp;B and Hip Hop with a strong local following. The highlight of this part of his career was \"Gucci Goggles\", an underground hit outside Chicago. His rise was slowed after he was paralysed from the neck down two years ago, an accident which he's recently recovered from. Anthoney Hart (who last appeared on Planet Mu as East Man) now returns under his Basic Rhythm alias with a new album 'On The Threshold'. Recorded primarily with the DJ in mind, these tracks are colourful, brutalist and adventurous. Contemporary hybrids constructed from blocks of sound, their angular rhythms draw on Britain's dance music past, but with an eye firmly on the present. The album starts with 'St. Fabian Tower', named after the now demolished tower block in Chingford where Anthoney used to DJ for Rude FM. The track's lush detuned synths and syncopated drums are girded by stern low end frequencies. Drum and bass, jungle and hardcore are the touchstones here, but the forms he creates make no attempt to imitate the music of those eras. Take the rolling, bubbling, almost jazz-drummer patterns of 'Yeah, I Like It' and 'I Want You' where strange pops and bubbles seem to be forced through the grid almost like they're an effect of pressure. It's an odd juxtaposition next to the soulful vocals but an effective one. 'Edge Of Darkness' meanwhile, is an intense, rough ride of sliding rhythms and elephantine bass. Elsewhere, like on 'A New Consciousness', things are tempered into a more streamlined techno-like hybrid. He let's loose in the claps and kicks banger of 'Fi Di Gyal', but even here there are neat sonic tricks that sound like nods to minimalist composition. His taste for melody and dreamy beauty above roughness and intricacy confused people who were hanging on too tightly to the rules. He even brought in Japanese vocalist Kazumi, adding an extra human touch.\"Challenge Me Foolish\" is something of a companion to the Royal Astronomy record; arguably even better given the fresh ears selecting the material. It's imbued with a confident sense of pastoral colour, and a gentle optimism, utilising bells, studied orchestral arrangements and airy synthesisers that sit the album somewhere between, Jean Jacques Perrey (the French electronic composer whose whimsy was always balanced with serious innovation and chops) and the colourful, optimistic soundtracks of Joe Hisaishi. There's a strange sense of the old and new throughout, the sentimental and utopia, with nary a hint of darkness. Even when the album dips into the hyperkinetic rhythms of jungle, the melodies and mood still retain a sense of gentle warmth. It was both maximal and graceful, thoughtful but physical music that came out of the 'anything goes' approach of certain club nights she was involved with in Berlin, and stood head and shoulders above other music coming out of the city's club scene. Since then Ziúr has clearly been working hard, and on 'ATØ' she has developed a sophisticated toolbox of sounds from which this album is produced. It's rush of clear electronic beeps and tones, crunchy drums and cold metallic stabs share space alongside bell tones and marimba, dhol drums, r\u0026amp;b melodies and rich strings, as if the gritty distortion of 'U Feel Anything?' has given way to a bloom of colour. As a songwriter, Ziúr's work on 'ATØ' has really grown. The songs could be loosely described as left-field pop, but like all her music there is a steely undertow of determined strength. The album features some key surrogates in the shape of singer and producer Samantha Urbani of the band 'Friends' and rapper Ash B, who lays down a gravelly response to betrayal on F.O.E (Friendship Over Ego). What's even more unique about the album is that Ziúr pops up multiple times singing, her voice transformed through effects into a different character every time. On the lead track 'ATØ' her vocals are pitched down to feel like she's a wise, otherworldly force, or the ghostly childlike voice transmitted on 'I Vanish', the swooning tones of Life Sick, or on the last track 'Mother' where she intones in her own untreated voice. 'ATØ' has a purpose laid out in it's title. His music was introduced to the world via his 2016 EP 'Mavericks' (Planet Mu), recorded while he was moving from Istanbul to London where he's now been living the last 3 years. Sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in Turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.While his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, 'Free For All' expands it's range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of MCs from all corners of the globe: UK drill squad 67's Dimzy, Stockholm's Yung Lean and Chicago rapper and singer DJ Nate (aka Flexxbabii) who's previously recorded on Planet Mu as a footwork producer. The record also features the rowdy sing-song of Egyptian MCs Dawsha and Abanob from Cairo whom Sami met while on tour in Egypt.Musically, Sami's production is refined and elegant, familiar tropes are reassembled in original ways, the instrumentation reflecting his background and influences simultaneously. These are survival ballads for the near future, whose vocals, mutated to fit into this setting, drift in a haze of dissociation. Musically, at first glance, it's sparse and minimal but with continued immersion, subtle iridescent-light shadows shimmer around grainy colour, sub bass rises through kicks and snares retooled from their surroundings, not so much refixed as decaying. Felix has been here before in his incarnation as Lexxi, making his debut appearance on Total Freedom's 2012 \"Blasting Voice\" compilation, and as a co-producer on Elysia Crampton's \"Demon City\" album. He then went on to release his first instrumental EP \"5TARB01\" in 2016 on his own imprint Endless. He also runs an NTS show of the same name, along with previously holding raves, cross pollinating and interacting with the vanguard of the electronic underground. The punky crunch of those earlier releases is reflected in tracks like \"Smoke\" made with long time collaborator and southside resident Kamixlo. These club moments inevitably give way to the vocals, conveying a feeling of loss and renewal. Miles Mitchell, a 26 year-old South East Londoner, started his own Gobstopper label back in 2010 after having his debut release on Butterz. Last year he started the flourishing Boxed 'Instrumental Grime' night alongside producers Slackk, Logos and Oil Gang. For Mr. Mitch, Grime has 'always been an experimental and progressive genre, taking elements of what came before it and pushing those boundaries to create something new'. His debut album is called PARALLEL MEMORIES and Miles has an intriguing story that explains that title. When listening to his tracks, he sees the same vivid scenes in his head each time he replays the music, often repeated snapshots of his life in various impossible scenarios or distorted situations. This made him think 'What if the images I'm seeing are memories from an alternative version of me in a parallel dimension?' a question which reflects his vision of Grime too, as his instrumentals are informed by a quite personal and emotive alter-life, where Grime's famous minimalism gives way to a gentle subtlety and is imbued with a very different feeling to the brash aggression associated with the genre. This is an album that deserves to find an audience who are willing to go on a journey into new areas with Grime. Swirling child-like synth melodies, coiling over flattened, but airy kick drums. The Night follows sounding like something Boards of Canada might do if they came from S. E. London, it's gorgeous flute melodies opening up gracefully over minimal rhythms and shifting static tones. 'Intense Faces' marks a shift in the energy to bassline, synth swoops and sharp claps, a child-like bleep tune playing out over the top. 'Don't Leave' switches the mood to one of sadness, it's rising chords evolving over a repeated, slowed-down acapella. Elsewhere 'Sweet Boy Code', a collaboration with fellow Gobstopper artist Dark0, let's spacey kicks propel it's gentle relaxed melodies over airy sampled vocals. The midpoint track 'Wandering Glaciers' twists Grime into what sounds like a tense piece of early electronica. Meanwhile 'Bullion' chops up a lumbering sample that sound like a marauding giant. The album finishes on 'Hot Air', with it's drum pattern sounding like a slow heart beat and strange, backwards synths, it feels like a voyage around a body. Entropy Flash is a pile-driving epic the relentless, heavily filtered analogue rhythms and skull splitting drones offset by delicate wistful melodies and a warm, extemporized bassline. It's title might make reference to a classic techno track by Beltram, but there the similarity ends. This is no homage, the sound is pure Ekoplekz, and the onus is on the listener to gauge what statement, if any, is being made here. Fans of a certain late-eighties psychedelic drone-rock group might spot another reference in the title of the flipside, Entropy Symphony, though as with the A-side, all sense of Ecstasy has long since evaporated. Beginning with a volley of pensive densely entwined melodic loops, the track is gradually submerged in layers of searing drone-noise. Though further propelled by the introduction of a one-note bass hit, ultimately the symphony disintegrates into a grey void of instability. Alan Myson) returns to Planet Mu with his sixth album 'Outland'.The album was written during a period of new beginnings following a move out of the city to a quieter space and the birth of his first child. During this time of self-imposed isolation Alan recorded a huge amount of source material and spent weeks and months sitting up at night with his newborn, listening back and making notes on how the new record should take form, focusing and developing ideas to shape this lean ten-track album.Alan talks of the record being a collaboration between two parts of himself, something that definitely comes across as the album unfolds. Textures are something Alan excels at and on his last album, the largely beatless 'Bodied', it felt as if he was building a new sound-world. On 'Outland' he expands upon this. The album brings together the extremes of Alan's sound, contrasting roughened bass and beats with starker more detailed atmospheres and emotions.The most beat-driven song here is 'Deadhead', with it's gnarled bouncing bass, angular distorted melodies and cavernous textures. On tracks like 'Bladed Terrain' the contrasts are even more defined with buzzing drones and razor sharp drums plunging into a grainy fog, giving the track a dramatic 3D feel. Then there are the stop-start pauses of 'Leaving The Grid', where the song evaporates into space before reemerging with shuddering rhythms and ghostly textures. Melodies crawl around these tracks as if they're just waking up, as heard on the atmospheric 'Angel In Ruin'.The sleep-deprived fraying of the senses became Alan's routine and one which he says gave him a renewed creative energy; half-asleep, working through the night, and then into the daytime super-focused but exhausted. Prone to audio hallucinations whilst writing the album, he aimed to capture these distortions in his perception of pitch and time, and you can hear these effects interpreted on tracks like 'Endless' and 'Open Heart' as melodies phase and slip out of time like an emotional Doppler effect. Zora released several collaborations on last year's 'Visceral Minds 2' including 'Dark Matter' with Planet Mu's Jlin, while Sinjin has collaborated, with, DJ Rashad, Just Blaze and MikeQ, and also, produced music for monoliths like Kanye West and Frank Ocean. Remarkably, given the breadth of their work, 'Vicious Circles' is their first collaborative EP, and the first time either have released a vinyl record too. The EP is a great showcase for the duo's emotional, maximalist chimeras of abstract pounding beats. From the punchy, circular, grandiose build-ups of opener 'Vicious Circles', to the unyielding melancholy of 'God' with it's sinister Bulgarian choir sample against a, peak Timbaland-era rhythm, the record's potent synths and manipulated vocals are both simultaneously fierce and friendly. Although it's primarily a beatless album, it's one with a big smile on it's face. Scholefield started making 'Caramel' after his last record in 2012, \"My surroundings have a direct influence on the mood of what I make. I made Regional Surrealism when I was living in a big empty flat on my own in Glasgow town centre surrounded by concrete and junkies. Moving next to the park, closer to friends and getting to tour the world had a positive effect on the feel of the tracks.\" 'Caramel' has a lightness and energy, an unrepentant joyful cheesiness even - like the rave piano and spiralling arpeggios of 'Cosmic Trigger' or the big beatless build up of the title track. \"A lot of the tracks are very simple, that's quite an important theme.\" He adds \"I remember the Human League talk about how you can play their songs using only a couple of fingers on the synth, or Boards Of Canada saying it's important to be able to hum their melodies really easily.\" There's also a strong element of rave memory in this ambience. It's influenced in some ways by touring the world with Lone doing visuals and DJing, but also from simply listening to old rave tapes and taking in the warmth and energy. As he says \"Some of the tracks are like photocopies of photocopies of rave tracks, where the drums have dissolved and it's just the melodies that have survived.\" You can hear this distinctly on 'Perc Rave'. Other tracks are more or less drones that build into melodies, like 'Beatrice's Visit', as he says \"I'm always trying to find the most ecstatic and basic loop and just let it run and do it's thing. I heard a funny story about Basic Channel popping out to get a kebab and letting their machines run while they were out.\" Other tracks approach the pastoral melodies of prime nineties IDM such as 'At The Lake' and 'Rainbow Bounce' which almost seem like a homage to Planet Mu's Mike Paradinas at his most beatific.
