Warm Earth, a musical duo comprising singer Irith Abada and guitarist Warren Barrett, is not an easy group to pigeonhole. In some songs, they carry the sultry bossa nova swing of Abada's native Brazil. In others, there is a soulful, bluesy strut with a touch of nightclub jazz. And even at their most smoky cool, there's a rock 'n' roll spirit ready to burst out at just the right moment. The duo's new, self-titled debut album is a long time in the making. The two musicians recorded the album last year, backed by a solid group of San Diego session musicians, and some of it's songs were written early on in Adaba and Barrett's working relationship. Each half of Warm Earth comes from very different backgrounds - Irith was born in raised in Brazil, while Warren hails from Southern California, where the band originally formed. But the diversity of the duo extends to their musical backgrounds as well, each of them bringing a different musical flavor to the table, from Adaba's bossa nova influences from the likes of Elis Regina to Barrett's background in blues and jazz. This commingling of cultural identities and musical influences is at the heart of Warm Earth, and what makes it unique. Throughout the whole of the band's new album, they never stay in one place for too long. "Rain Falls" begins as a Latin jazz number, with vibrant bursts of brass between Adaba's graceful vocals, yet evolves into a fiery blues-rock number once Barrett embarks on a sizzling solo. "Streets of Hope" is a classic torch song, which finds an irresistible jazz groove backed by meaty Hammond organ. And on "My Highway," Barrett fires up his wah-wah pedal for a brief eruption of raw, rock 'n' roll muscle. There's always something new to be heard in Warm Earth's music, and new sounds and styles to uncover. Irith Abada and Warren Barrett have poured a vast array of influences and ideas into a soulful, evocative and yes - warm! - sonic melting pot. Warm Earth is rock. Warm Earth is jazz. Warm Earth is blues. It is all of these things, but above all, Warm Earth is the sound of a life-long passion realized.
