It's not necessarily a sound associated with XTC per se but, with the twin guitar line-up now fully settled, relentless touring schedule and thoughts of recording with Lillywhite and Padgham in the studio where the same engineer\/producer combo had established that drum sound, thinking of XTC in rock band terms was the ideal approach for the multitude of songs Partridge and Moulding were individually producing. Preceded by a set of live demos at Phonogram studios, XTC knew exactly what it wanted from a fourth album - even down to the original album title: Work Under Pressure (which helps make more sense of the sleeve photo), prior to setting foot in The Townhouse for the main recordings. The switch to Black Sea was made only to allay the then band manager's sensitivity to the title being interpreted as a criticism of his management style. More power rock than power pop, when released in Sept. 1980, the album became XTC's first Top 20 chart album in the UK, narrowly missed the Top 40 (#41) in the USA where it was issued in November, but spent an impressive 24 weeks on the Billboard chart nonetheless. 'Generals And Majors' and 'Towers Of London' provided twin back to back Top 40 UK singles released either side of the album in a tight eight weeks' release space in September and October, while 'Sgt. Rock' propelled the band back into the UK top 20 in January 1981. Following seven years of enforced silence due to contractual disputes with Virgin Records, XTC returned in 1999 with it's own label (Idea) and an album which many fans consider to be the band's finest recording: Apple Venus Volume I. A stunning selection of songs, mostly acoustic and enhanced by subtle orchestral arrangements, it was in some ways different to what anyone might have expected from the band yet, in hindsight, the logical progression and culmination of musical ideas signposted via songs such as 'Chalkhills \u0026amp; Children' and 'Wrapped in Grey'. A Top 20 album in Japan, the album also charted in the UK and USA though the seven years absence had eroded some of the commercial momentum the band had enjoyed - especially in the USA - with the run of albums from Skylarking to Nonsuch. It marked a turn towards the more pastoral pop songs that would dominate later XTC releases, with an emphasis on acoustic guitar, 12-string electric guitar and fretless bass. Wasp Star, the band's final album (to date), employed far more of the intricately arranged, guitar driven, XTC sound which Dave Gregory had helped to develop from his point of arrival with 1979's Drums \u0026amp; Wires. While not as strikingly different as Apple Venus Vol. I, it was intended as the 'other part' of that album and writing sessions and was subtitled Apple Venus Vol. II. The first 1980s versions didn't include Dear God and after it was a hit, Mermaid Smiled was dropped on some later versions to include Dear God. The full album has only been on vinyl in 2LP deluxe editions playing at 45RPM. When it came time to master the album on vinyl in 2010, Andy Partridge - still never entirely happy with the overall sound of the finished album - took it to award-winning mastering engineer John Dent, who noticed something that had never previously been spotted. Somewhere, possibly in the transfer from the multi-channel tape to the stereo master, a polarity had been reversed. This is not the same thing as a reversed left\/right channel which puts a stereo picture out of phase and makes the sound unlistenable, but a much more difficult to pin down event that can be triggered by something as simple as a badly wired plug in the overall system which, nonetheless, removes some of the punch and presence from a finished recording. With the polarity corrected, the album - complete with original artwork and Dear God - was issued on vinyl as a double LP deluxe edition playing at 45rpm in the original rejected sleeve, then later reissued with the more familiar sleeve... Leaving some fans to wonder why they couldn't have the 15 song LP on single vinyl playing at 33 \u0026amp; 1\/3 RPM. Andy Partridge - never entirely happy with the overall sound of the finished album - took it to award-winning mastering engineer John Dent, who noticed something that had never previously been spotted. Somewhere, possibly in the transfer from the multi-channel tape to the stereo master, a polarity had been reversed. This is not the same thing as a reversed left\/right channel which puts a stereo picture out of phase and makes the sound unlistenable, but a much more difficult to pin down event that can be triggered by something as simple as a badly wired plug in the overall system which, nonetheless, removes some of the punch and presence from a finished recording. Nonsuch, XTC's tenth album, was recorded in 1991 and originally issued in March 1992. It was a top 30 album in the UK (#28) and Top 100 album in the USA (#97), where it also made it to #1 in the, then significant, College album chart. XTC's sixth album, Mummer was another turning point for the band as it marked their first release as a studio only band. The comparatively quieter\/more considered English Settlement was very much an album of songs written with one ear for the studio and another for how they would work live. Mummer was different. Freed from the constraints of 'the road' this was XTC in widescreen - experimenting with songs, arrangements and the expanded sonic palette that studios can provide when there is no afterthought as to how to reproduce the material in a variety of theatres, university halls and other venues few, if any, of which were built with rock groups in mind. And, just as the Mummers' plays involve people travelling from place to place in a village enacting tales of the cycle of life (albeit in disguise), XTC travelled the best of the UK's studios recording, mixing and re-mixing their songs cycle to exacting standards. XTC's seventh album, The Big Express was virtually ignored on release, much as it's immediate predecessor Mummer had been. If Mummer was XTC's quiet album, this was it's polar opposite: bright, brash, noisy - even cluttered on occasion if the song demanded it - as it became a concept album of sorts, a partly autobiographical reflection on growing up in an industrial town, Swindon, with it's history of engineering and railway accomplishments. Perhaps in keeping with that tradition of technical innovation, the album also made extensive use of (at the time) new technology with Linn-Drum programming (alongside drummer Peter Phipps), E-mu Emulator and other synths claiming space among the more traditional guitars, bass and drums mix under-pinning the vocals. This technology was juxtaposed with technology of a slightly earlier pop\/rock era as phasing, backwards tapes and the inclusion of a mellotron hinted at a psychedelic influence that would move more center stage with the band's next project - The Dukes of Stratosphear. With XTC no longer touring, the sound radically different to any previous XTC album, in a musical climate where the upper end of the charts reflected national radio, producing the most mainstream result for years: Lionel Richie, Sade, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones, Tina Turner, Queen - Frank Sinatra's final solo studio album... The space for a metallic, post-punk concept album about growing up amidst the ghosts of Swindon's industrial heritage proved non-existent. Of course the songs were as good as on any other XTC album - a very high standard indeed - but they went largely unheard. Given that position, it would be easy to conclude that the timing was wrong for the album. But the best musicians follow the music and allow the times to catch up with that; precisely what happened when XTC released it's next album Skylarking in 1986.
