The river was important in the manufacturing of cotton goods produced in the mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts where Bob grew up. The town along the river represents a theme running through some of the songs on this recording. The songs depict a broad spectrum of mill town life including hobos catching freight trains, street life, a portrait of Stella Kerouac and much more.
