In the absence of the sketches for almost two-thirds of the opera, Mahler reconstructed a performing edition from the extant vocal parts by orchestrating the fragments and, additionally, re-scoring unfamiliar and unpublished music of Weber. While the completed work contains music almost entirely by Weber, the re-scoring and the conception are entirely Mahlerian.
