Toronto's Danko Jones fell off my radar two albums ago, but the Scandos have understood his bluster from the jump. Despite the enduring boulder on his shoulder, the frontman's can't-touch-this swagger now feels earned rather than precocious, and his AC/DC/Phil Lynott thing has matured. Black and Blue is a Gatling gun of heavy push-pull riffs with a thick, rhythmic tone and unflagging energy. Don't Do This has a winningly braying intro, and Always Away lifts a famed Angus Young opener for a kind of alt-hard rock - but really, Jones is less the lickmeister than the face, snarl and guitar edge of what is a three-man rhythm section: fast, hard and convincing. Thoroughly, and creditably, created to be played live.

Tracks:
1.1 Terrified 3:27
1.2 Get Up 3:10
1.3 Legs 3:38
1.4 Just a Beautiful Day 3:15
1.5 I Don't Care 3:20
1.6 You Wear Me Down 3:55
2.1 Type of Girl 3:46
2.2 Always Away 4:12
2.3 Conceited 3:48
2.4 Don't Do This 3:43
2.5 The Masochist 2:54
2.6 I Believed in God 3:59
2.7 I Believed in God (Reprise) 0:47
