The organization pursues excellence in an effort to worship our God and bring others closer to Him. For it's 10th anniversary season, Deo Cantamus has recorded it's debut album, 'Grace Alone,' consisting of twelve choral arrangements that set traditional hymn texts to beautiful, original choral music accompanied by strings and composed by Minnesota composer, Josh Bauder. Josh Bauder is a Minneapolis-based composer and student. He completed his undergraduate education in music and philosophy in 2010 at the University of St. Thomas. In 2012 Josh graduated from Central Seminary with an M.A. in theology, and he will complete an M.A. in music composition from the University of Minnesota in the spring of 2014. Josh's music has been played by orchestras, chamber ensembles, choral ensembles, handbell choirs and keyboardists. He writes frequently for Deo Cantamus and the St. Thomas Alumni Choir, of which he is a conductor, and he has collaborated with professional local ensembles such as Zeitgeist and Indånde. Josh began resetting hymns in November 2011, motivated by the belief that there are many great hymn texts that are theologically rich and poetically competent, yet under-used and under-appreciated. His endeavor has been to revive these texts by setting them to new music. For each hymn he undertakes, Josh does two things. First, he composes a simple, straight-forward, four-part harmonization - something one would find in a hymnal. This is intended for local churches to use in congregational worship. Second, he expands the four-part harmonizations into full-fledged choral arrangements--more challenging arrangements that choirs will find sophisticated and interesting. These octavos are the music that has been professionally recorded for 'Grace Alone.' The Deo Cantamus ensemble, led by Al Hawkins, has beautifully interpreted Josh's compositions, drawing fresh meaning and inspiration from the theologically robust texts.
