In the tradition of the great altoists of the 1950s he possesses a sweet yet authoritative sound and complete command of the harmonic intricacies of the modern jazz idiom. He is ably supported by a fabulous band of young players including trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (on four tracks) and pianist Jeb Patton, Dmitry presents a winning program of tunes from the canon including rarities like Clifford Brown's LaRue and Gigi Gryce's Shabozz. This is a superb session that combines hard-driving playing with tender lyricism and establishes Dmitry Baevsky as an exceptional new voice on the alto saxophone.
