Czech composer Alois Hába (1893-73) systematically used tones located in between the chromatic steps regularly used in occidental music. In his manifold contributions to the leading genre of string quartet, completely documented in this edition of four CDs, Hába splits the whole tone into regular half-tones, as well as into quarter, fifth, and sixth tones. The intriguing musical effects resulting from this method are realized here by the Frankfurt-based Hába Quartet.
