He will be forever remembered for numbers like 'Stardust', 'Georgia On My Mind', 'The Nearness of You', 'Heart And Soul', 'Lazybones', 'Skylark' and 'In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening', the latter an Academy Award winner. Carmichael composed several hundred songs, including fifty that achieved hit record status during his lifetime. He also appeared as a character actor and musical performer in fourteen movies, hosted several musical-variety radio programmes, performed regularly on TV, and wrote two best-selling autobiographies.
