It took me two months to record my first album, Crossing to Safety, over a summer when I was 19. We recorded in a state-of-the-art studio, every day for those weeks, but we ran out of time, and it had to be finished, so it never really had a chance to be what I thought it could have been. Inbetween was recorded in stolen weekends over five years, mostly just myself and my producer and friend Brian Morey, crammed with our instruments and computers in closets and unused bedrooms in Auburn, Aurora, Syracuse, Albany, and New York, NY. We worked in blizzards and heat waves for 3 to 5 days at a time, and then we'd spend months just listening to the tracks in progress and dreaming of the next recording session and what we could do to make them better. And we took our time. And we did it right. And nothing went to print until we thought it was perfect. Then mixing and mastering and art design and printing and digital distribution. And the result is the absolute best versions of these song ideas that we could craft. I am prouder of this CD than almost anything I've ever done. It tells the story of a fictional relationship between the singer and the love of his life, from beginning to ending to rebirth, and all the complexities inbetween. It is an extremely personal album, as all of these beautiful love songs were inspired by and written for the love of my life, my wife, Meghann. (All the tumultuous angsty tunes, by the way, are not about her, I promise, but are more the product of my overactive imagination.) And even the cover art is part of the story. The back cover is a postcard, sent to the singer by his love (inspired by the song Hello Hello, which was originally titled Postcard from Nowhere) and which has clearly been carried with him for some time. Each of the song titles on the album have been drawn by the singer from the text of this love letter, since she is ultimately his greatest inspiration. And the album is essentially then a gift from him to her. The album title comes from her words as well. She writes: 'After all, it's not just you or me, but what's Inbetween us that makes a life.' With all that said, here is Inbetween. I hope you enjoy this journey and these songs as much as I have enjoyed writing, recording and crafting them. Kevin T.
