The word "ricercar" originally indicated the trying-out of an instrument's strings during the tuning process. The earliest works on this collection of ricercars, by Andrea Gabrieli and the unappetizingly named Flemish-Italian composer Jacques Buus, have the quality of totally free fantasy the name suggests. But this fine release by Dutch organist Liuwe Tamminga, originally released in 1997 and reissued in 2009, offers some gems anyone can enjoy. A few of the composers also wrote madrigals that would be classed as Mannerist, with extravagant text-setting devices and spectacular splashes of dissonance.

Tracks:
1.1 Ricercar Alla Terza for Keyboard in Tone 6 (From Toccate Et Ricercari, 1604)
1.2 Ricercar No. 4
1.3 Intonazione E Ricercar No. 3, for Organ
1.4 Ricercar No. 7 Sopra Salve Regina, for Organ
1.5 Ricercar No. 5 Sopra la Sol Fa Re Mi, for Organ
1.6 Ricercar Del Primo Tuono, for 4 Parts
1.7 Ricercar No. 14 Sopra Ave Maria, for Organ
1.8 Intonazione E Ricercar in Tone 6, for Organ
1.9 Intonazione E Ricercar No. 1 in Tone 3, for Organ
1.10 Toccata E Ricercar Del 4° Tono, for Organ
1.11 Work(S): Intonazione E Ricercar Del 5O Tono
1.12 Intonazione E Ricercar on the 12th Tone for Organ
1.13 Intonazione E Ricercar No. 7 (6° Tono), for Organ

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only.
