Trova musicians have played an important part in the evolution of Cuban music and have contributed a great many compositions to the Cuban musical canon; helping spread Cuban music throughout the world. Singer, guitarist and composer Maria Teresa Vera, who began recording in 1911, was perhaps the greatest trovadore of the 20th Century, a national folk hero who was the embodiment of Cuban song, with a career that spanned five decades.
