Internationally acclaimed pianist Bill Carrothers joins guitarist Dean Magraw's Twin Cities based trio Red Planet for a masterful collaboration. Red Planet with Bill Carrothers features ten tracks, dancing between the trio's typically electrified romps and folk-tinged ballads, while Carrothers' impressionistic piano weaves through the nooks and crannies of the music, spinning an elegant web of lyricism and texture. The album showcases Carrothers' sultry piano steeped in the blues, as well as the nimbleness of the quartet, full of lilt and levity, as they navigate a mix of originals and standards by the likes of John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. In the end, Red Planet with Bill Carrothers is an album about honesty and discovery, as two musical entities come together for the first time in serendipitous fashion. In some ways, it acts as a homecoming of sorts for Carrothers, a Twin Cities native who has long since left for New York before moving to the upper peninsula of Michigan and a busy touring schedule in Europe. Throughout his career, Carrothers has performed with countless jazz luminaries including Curtis Fuller, Billy Higgins, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Konitz, James Moody, Gary Peacock, Dewey Redman, Charlie Rouse, Toots Thielemans, and Prince. Carrothers has performed extensively throughout Europe. In July, 2009, he played a week-long stint at the Village Vanguard with his European trio, a recording of which was released in 2011. He is also a regular on the Chicago scene, having performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Green Mill, and The Jazz Showcase. Carrothers was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for Jazz in 2004 and was nominated for the Les Victoires du Jazz (French Grammy Award equivalent) in 2005 and 2011. Downbeat Magazine called him "a probing, intelligent player" with "a beautiful touch and a wide stylistic range" who "never sounds less than a musician who thinks on his feet and channels emotions freely."
