Drawn from the innovative musical palette of Radiohead, T.V. on the Radio, Tricky's magnum opus Maxinquaye and the Rapture's dance-punk epic Echoes. The Red Electric's debut album Wonderland Fight Songs, bursts into existence with a spirit so alien yet so vaguely familiar. Dirty electronics fused with edgy rockstar riffs give the album a unique avant-garde dissonance. Structures flow seamlessly from the fat analog synth textures of Days of Heaven to the epic strings, bassoon and flute of The Angels to the provocative dance floor burning I Wanna Fuck the Whole World. This album has diversity yet coherence, a musical gift for the new millennium. A gift sealed with a voice, a special voice. Searing and soaring above it all as if reaching for the gates of heaven this voice invokes the spirits of Thom Yorke and Peter Murphy. Drifting high above effortlessly in a dreamy falsetto then pulling deep from a dark baritone belfry. This was meant to be. Spawned from the minds of just two men this feels like the work of many. Riddled with hooks, power choruses and non-traditional song structures there is not a recycled melody to be found. Vocalist/Lyricist Wilhelm Michael Hill weaves stories of decadence, love, sex and social elitism like a master seamstress over sometimes beautifully simple other times dark deep song structures. Produced by Brandon Cruz in his own Kali Lodge studio the compositions draw equally from traditional instruments and electronic synthesis. Playing nearly every note alone, one gets the idea this is a man of many facets, possessed by many demons, a wearer of many hats. This is art for arts sake. Call it pretentious, but the common thread that binds these songs together draws you in, drags you in, ties you up and makes you feel. This is an album meant for road-trips and headphones, for red wine, for twilight. So immerse yourself in this mosaic fusion of masterfully engineered musical bliss. Absorb the resonating and intelligent lyrics, the dark and beautiful instrumentation. Appreciate the effort and integrity of an album years in the making. And realize this is only the beginning. The Red Electric's full length debut Wonderland Fight Songs is available through Kali Lodge Records.
