Riccardo Zandonai's 1914 opera Francesca da Rimini, a work of love, plotting, betrayal and ultimately (double!) murder, is offered here in a 1961 live performance from Trieste, Italy starring the greatest Turkish soprano of the 20th c., Leyla Gencer as Francesca. A gifted coloratura singer, on her best nights (as many surviving live recordings confirm, including this one), her impact was great indeed.
