For their debut CD, this Seattle-bred, New York-based brass quartet interprets chamber pieces, jazz tunes, and film music composed by their mentor Wayne Horvitz. An intimate view of one of America’s most engaging genre-bending artists, the album’s combination of folk, classical, and improvisational approaches will appeal far beyond jazz circles. The high-res sound was captured in a spacious cabin on Lopez Island, WA, where the band worked with producer Horvitz for a full week. Though the focus is on Horvitz’s beautiful compositions, The Westerlies also honor the improvisational heart of the music; Horvitz joins the band on synthesizer for a number of improvised interludes. The Westerlies are Riley Mulherkar and Zubin Hensler, trumpet, Andy Clausen and Willem de Koch, trombone.
