Lauri Sallinen has won himself a reputation as a clarinetist with a voice of his own and as a charismatic performer in both classical and contemporary repertoire. He is one of the Finnish clarinetists most in demand for chamber music and can be regularly heard at festivals both in Finland and abroad. In the album Songs of Solitude, which is Sallinen's debut release, one can find solo clarinet pieces from the late twentieth century, including works by Messiaen, Berio, Donatoni, and Reich. The opening track, 'Sans Paroles,' by rising Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, is dedicated to Lauri Sallinen and is receiving here it's world premiere recording. "For me, playing the clarinet is, all in all, singing without words. Again, it's limitations become a strength: in the absence of words, the player has to express their meaning in other ways."
