4sure is a latin jazz formation. Four friends-in-music from various corners of the world joined forces to create an electrifying fusion of different music styles, blending Surinam Paramaribop and jazz with Brazilian and Cuban flavors. These pioneers of Paramaribop, mixing Afro-Surinam rhythms and melody with the abstract harmonies of jazz and bebop, are now considered to be the frontrunners of contemporary Afro-Caribbean music. 4sure biographies band members Juan Pablo Nahar ( acoustic bass ) was born in Paramaribo Suriname. Pablo started at an early age to practice music. In Amsterdam he was the co-founder of the legendary ' Surinam Music Ensemble' and a pioneer at the beginning of the development of ' Paramaribop' ( the unique combination of Afro-Surinam Kaseko/Kawina rhythms and the abstract & more complex harmonies of Jazz & Bebop ). In New York he followed the teachings in composing & arranging by Frank Foster. In 1997 he founded the quintet called 'SURFIVE' as a nursery for the further development of Paramaribop. Recently he transformed the band into '4sure' the quartet he has been touring with lately. 4sure is one Pablo's favorite crossover projects in order to keep his mojo working as a front runner of contemporary Afro Caribbean music ! Pablo Nahar' s discography consists of 4 albums with 'Surinam Music Ensemble'; 2 solo albums; 'Ring no Bell' with a ten piece orchestra and 'Fre Yuru' with his trio 'Parohé'. The debut album of 'SurFive' was called 'Personnel Changes '. His latest release is 'Brujeria' by 4sure. He also performed and recorded with Jan Akkerman, Margie Evans, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Cornell Rochester, David Murray, Han Bennink, Benny Bailey, Ramon Valle and others. Olaf Keus (drums) was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and started to play percussion and drums when he was seven years old. He attended the conservatory in Amsterdam and Rotterdam and he also attended lessons at the Conjuncto Folclorico National de Cuba, and practiced percussion in Africa, New York and Brazil. Olaf frequently performs with Artists from Brazil, like Ceumar and Macleim. He also plays together with internationally renowned artist like Ramon Valle, Nippy Noya, Deborah J. Carter, Michelle David and with jazz pianist Mike del Ferro. He's played in Upside Down for six years, the band of the legendary saxophonist and singer Rosa King; they recorded 3 albums and toured the world several times. Rosa King and Upside Down played with Guest artists as like Akkerman, Alex Britty, Luther Allison and Hans Dulfer. Lately he has been touring with the Mike del Ferro Trio, in Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Costa Rica and Panama. Recently Mike and Olaf also toured the Netherlands and Belgium with the singer guitar player Ceumar from Brazil. Efraïm Trujillo (tenor sax) was born in Lynwood, California, and started playing the clarinet when he was 9 years old. Efraïm resides in Amsterdam since 1980 . He toured and performed in Holland with Fra Fra Sound, Surfive and New Cool Collective (Big Band) and also abroad (US, Jamaica, Marocco, Malta, Cuba, Senegal, Ghana and South Africa). He's played with the Surinam Music Ensemble, Nueva Manteca, Cubop City Big Band, John Engels 4, Martin van Duinhoven, Courtney Pine, Benny Baily, Steve Williamson, Bootsy Collins, Lester Bowie and Hans Dulfer. In recent years he is performing a lot with Shooster and the Ploctones. Mark Milan on piano. After completing the jazz program at the Hilversum Conservatory in 1992, he attended the Rotterdam Conservatory (World Music Department), graduating in 1996. Mark began his professional career at the age of 18, when he became a regular member of Chicago-born blues guitarist Ronald Abrams' band. He soon became known in the musical community for his diversity and musicality. He has performed with many artists, including Rumbata, Gerardo Rosales, Unisono, Denise Jannah, Saskia Laroo, Izaline Calister. With Fra-Fra Sound/Big Band he has toured in Europe, Africa, Jamaica, Cuba, and Surinam. Mark appeared at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1998 with Fra-Fra Sound, and in 2001 with Eddy Veldman's Opoyeye. His recordings include the CD's of Fra-Fra Sound and Rumbata. Press revieuws 4sure NRC HANDELSBLAD - FRANS VAN LEEUWEN nl. December 2003 4sure came out of the legacy of the Surinam Music Ensemble and SUR5. Pablo Nahar founder of SUR5 was once a pioneer of Paramaribop a style created by S.M.E. More important than all that fuzz about how the band was founded, 4sure proves that their latin-jazz sound is one of a special kind. EfraïmTrujillo sings with fire on his tenor saxophone from the opener Flambo up to his own Jamboree. Drummer Olaf Keus stirs up the rhythm with great flexibility. Pablo Nahars acoustic bass doesn't often appear on the foreground but that's ok, since pianist Robin van Geerke shakes out of his sleeve kilos of notes with exuberance. Deborah J. Carter's vocal contribution is well sung and gives a peaceful intermezzo to the whole album. Jazz archief nl.december 2003 ...The quartet itself emphasizes the different styles that every individual bandmember have within. Paramaribop (bebop-harmonies on Afro-Surinam rhytms) of Pablo Nahar, Brazilian en Cuban rhythms by Olaf Keus, Latin jazz melodies from Efraïm Trujillo and the more abstract piano playing of Robin van Geerke. All compositions are originals... Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival - South Africa aug. 2003 ....All following different professional routes before being united as 4sure, the band members bring an astonishing level of musical expertise and excellence to the stage. It's an entertainment experience not to be missed! WAM festival in Sasolburg, the Citizen - South Africa september 2003 ...One of the highlights of this year's festival included a performance by the visiting Dutch band 4sure, which performed at Kippies in Johannesburg earlier in the week. Their rhythms and swing were greatly appreciated by the audience... Slagwerkkrant - Erk Willemsen nl.december 2003 ... with 4sure Olaf Keus goes full steam ahead, serious! The CD Brujeria offers a sweet Caribbean jazz with a smooth feel of the rhythm section. On the up-tempo tracks Olaf's drumming is kicking, and often he is featured with virtuous groovy intro's and fills.... De Telegraaf - Rene Steenhorst nl.january 2004 ....The Band produced a surprisingly mature album called 'Brujeria' ( = witchcraft). A CD full of pure Afro-latin-jazz and contagious melodies... ... 4sure is thé platform whereon all four members can improvise their hearts out.
