When I was six years old I heard a song being sung on the wireless, the title of which was When I Grow Too Old To Dream. To my infant mind it made sense, especially as it continued, "I'll have you to remember". I did not know that three thousand miles away in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the writer of these words, Oscar Hammerstein II walked up and down his study singing it, wishing it were not obscure, but feeling that if he liked it so well, perhaps other people would too, and would not be too analytical about it's meaning. Oscar often used the word, "dream", in his lyrics. Of the one hundred and ten lyrics collected by his son, William, in the revised edition of Hammerstein's "Lyrics", published in 1985, twenty-six contain the word, "dream". That is nearly a quarter. Twenty of these lyrics are included on this CD in songs interpreted by a host of singing stars. Featuring When I Grow Too Old To Dream; Out Of My Dreams; I Have Dreamed with Evelyn Laye, Allan Jones, Doris Day, Pearl Bailey, Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Edmund Hockridge, Shirley Bassey.
