Harkening back to the '60's recordings of Archie Shepp, John Coltrane and others in the free Jazz vanguard of the time, Jimmy Bennington and his Midnight Choir band pay tribute to those and to his mentor, Elvin Jones (Bennington was Mr. Jones' road manager and drum tech for several years). Raised in Detroit and Houston, Bennington's music resides in the rich musical heritage of the Texas free music camp (Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman), and the fertile music school of Detroit's Jazz clubs. Matching headstrong urgency against tender lyricism, this CD opens new territory, revealing a stormy, eerily beautiful musical world where they and their listeners seem remarkably at home.
