Not without respect you could call Johan Wagenaar the Dutch Richard Strauss. (1862-1941). Both of them wrote virtuoso orchestral works that stand out for their brilliant orchestrations. Riccardo Chailly, brand new at the KCO, convinced the Decca label to invest in an album with seven concert overtures. That came out in 1990 and made the international music world aware of this forgotten tone poet. Collectors who bought the CD from Riccardo Chailly and the Royal Dutch CO are assured of an irreplaceable document, beautifully musicalized and beautifully recorded.
