The great R&B tenor saxophonist Lorenzo Holden shows off his range and exquisite tone on this rare instrumental single featuring the classic ballad Stella By Starlight, contrasted with the rockin' Holden penned instrumental rave-up Whipped Cream, on the flip side - originally released in 1955 on the Pasadena, California based Mambo Records label. Holden was the spectacular saxophonist whose playing was prominently featured in Johnny Otis' band for many years, and on recordings by vocalist Little Esther and many others. On this vintage single, Holden is backed by legendary West Coast pianist and arranger Ernie Freeman fronting a subdued organ combo on the A side and a rockin' little band featuring Louisianan rhythm and blues and boogie-woogie pianist Willie Egan on the flip, with some positively nasty guitar playing thrown in for good measure from studio wizard Chuck Norris.
