In the early 50's, several budget labels appeared offering low-priced covers of the current hit songs. The most prominent was Tops Records, distributed mainly through companies like Woolworth's and Kresge's and selling for as low as 39 cents. But the arrangements were all first-rate and their most talented singer was Mimi Martel, who turned out dozens of singles from 1949 to 1955, when she left to star on her own TV show and the label switched to LP's. She had her own distinct voice and style, but could also simulate such singers as Patti Page, Kay Starr, and Rosemary Clooney. She even covered Johnnie Ray! Here compiled for her very first album are the best of her titles all restored in Jasmine's pristine digital sound. She's a great singer who deserves to be re-discovered by a new generation
