This CD contains the first recordings Spanier made under his own name in almost three years. The tiny Jazz Ltd. Company gave him a chance with a fine band of lesser known musicians when he was playing in Chicago. This tiny boutique label was founded by Bill and Ruth Reinhardt as an offspring of their club on East Grand Street. The label's owner sat in on clarinet that day. Pianist Don Ewell later made many albums with veterans as well as a soloist. Two further tracks were recorded that day with the same band but featured Doc Evans instead of Spanier. Twice a year he played extended residencies at Doc Doughertys club but was also still regularly heard in Chicago where the recordings contained on this CD for Mercury were made.
