Eine Jugendfreundschaft (A Young Friendship) celebrates just this with these lieder compositions by composers Ludwig Thuille and Richard Strauss featuring the soprano Sabina von Walther accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch. While Thuille may be regarded as a "minor" composer compared to the staggeringly prodigious output of Strauss, their deep friendship and subsequent lives reminds us in many ways that genius is a mysterious alchemical combination of things that are difficult to name. These lieder as immersively performed as they are provide the perfect context to ponder these questions.
