With a crystal clear voice, fine yodelling and good guitar picking it's no surprise that Wilf Carter was Canada's first country music star. This is a selection from the two hundred or more terrific sides he cut between 1933 and 1944. His loyal fan base probably accounted for his phenomenal recording career - which stretched from the 1930s to the 1980s. His live performances were ever popular and he appeared regularly on the Canadian rodeo circuit. Having written nearly five hundred original songs he was inducted in to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971 and was voted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1984 - for many fans he's the father of Canadian country music.
