Few stories illustrate the dilemmas of postwar Europe quite so vividly as that of Hans of Hanus (as he was known in Czechoslovakia) Winterberg. In today's discourse, he would be referred to as a "Theresienstadt Composer," who was lucky enough to have survived the deportations to Auschwitz. Hans/Hanus Winterberg was a composer who found himself "caught in the middle" of nearly every division that grew out of the years of National Socialism and intriguingly, thereafter. His story is still too wrapped in mystery to fill in the gaps; yet it was Winterberg's strategic use of these gaps that would facilitate survival, both as a person and as an artist. This is the first release of any of his music for orchestra. His works are highly personal and yet reflective of late German Romanticism, touched by Impressionism.
