Originally known as the Cavaliers Quartet, The Caverliers were a young, talented ensemble of singers that formed in Brooklyn, New York in the early 1950s. After some early lineup changes, the vocal quartet consisted of Leroy Randolph (mostly lead), Marlowe Lowe Murray (first tenor), Cecil Holmes (second tenor and baritone) and Ron Anderson (bass). The fifth member of the group was pianist and occasional tenor, Lester Gardner. On their first commercial single released in 1953 on the New York City based Atlas label, You Thrill Me So b/w Dynaflow - the group was backed by songwriter/orchestra conductor Art Shelton's Orchestra - mainly featuring tenor saxophone, upright bass, and drums. In an unfortunate twist, Atlas accidentally renamed the group commercially, thanks to a typo on the 45 label. You Thrill Me So is a beautiful ballad featuring a lovely saxophone solo, while the flip side, Dynaflow, is an up-tempo, jump blues style affair that rocks hard and features some swinging sax. Gardner steps to the fore from the piano bench to sing the lead on the A-side, while Holmes handles the lead vocals on the B-side. After releasing a second single, a collaboration with labelmate Roscoe Thorne, the group changed their name to the Fi-Tones and recorded several additional singles, both on Atlas and it's Angletone subsidiary in the mid to late-1950s that have become highly sought after by serious collectors of group harmony.
