Otto Klemperer's heyday with the Concertgebouw Orchestra was in the early fifties: his Beethoven cycle from that time was long-remembered, but also in the wider repertoire he revealed himself as one of the great conductor-titans in the tradition of Toscanini and Furtwangler. Klemperer was an old-fashioned all-rounder, which is why he was equally at home conducting Mozart as Bartók, and could be just as free and authentic with the Austrian folklore of Mahler's work as with the Hungarian rhythms of Bartók's music, or the Spanish splendour of Falla's three symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra of 1911-1915, 'Noches en los jardines de España', heard here with the pianist/composer Willem Andriessen as soloist.
