Noted for his eclecticism, he made headway in genres like folk, ragtime, blues, jug band, gospel, rock, New Orleans jazz and swing. Especially revered are his takes on the St Louis Tickle and Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag. He received a lifetime achievement award from ASCAP
