Buganda, a part of Uganda peopled by the Baganda, was until abolished by Milton Obote in 1966, one of the most powerful of the kingdom states on bordering Lake Victoria. Recent Kabakas (Kings) were great patrons of the musical arts who employed a large number of professional musicians. Now these musicians and their art are disappearing, and this CD collects together performances from 1949-87. There are song with vocals as well as instrumental pieces featuring flutes, lyres, harps, xylophones and more on solo and ensemble works. This CD is part of the ongoing series of ethnic field records from the International Music Collection of the British Library Sound Archive.
